Kialua-Kona offers some of the best billfishing in the world. Check out the 'Grander Wall' that has photos of 1000+ pound fish. There's good action for tuna and a number of other species as well. The most outstanding record here is doubtlessly Kelly Everette's 1108-pound Pacific Blue Marlin caught on 30-pound test line. That's 37 times line test. Kelly and his charming wife run a classic charter boat here, the Northern Lights, and is available for charter Box 2098, Kialua-Kona, HI 96745 (808) 325-6522) Expect to pay $500 or more for a day's charter or $100 to $125 each for a group trip.
A lot of locals fish right off the breakwater in Kona Harbor and off the waterfront park in Hilo. A very large number of tackle shops all over the island can provide fishing directions and more. As a rule fishing improves away from population centers, but the very steep, rocky shore can make access difficult and sneaker waves likely. So watch the water at all times and try to fish near locals, or lifeguards in protected areas if possible. |
