Description and Basic Information ::
|
| Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge out of Kilauea and the Mokuaeae Island Bird Sanctuary are prime spots for shore and pelagic birds. Don't overlook the chance to see a rare monk seal that appears now and then on Kauai beaches. The Waailua River and the reservoir up by the Kauai Research Station and the nearby Keahua Arboretum are excellent birding spots. Kahuna Road that runs along and crosses Kapaa stream is another good area near Wailua. Down towards Nawiliwili bay the Menehune Fishpond collects wading and other water birds. Alakai Swamp's Pihea Trail and the far end where the trees are only five feet tall are the best bet on the island for rare birds. |
